Biomaterials and advanced polymers change the face of anterior segment surgery

چکیده
Recent advances in fields such as tissue engineering, advanced biomaterials and injectable polymers promise to alter the face of anterior segment surgery radically in coming years, according to an international panel of vision scientists. A clinical research symposium devoted to the theme of “New biomaterials and drug delivery in anterior segment surgery” enabled delegates attending the XXIII Congress of the ESCRS to catch up on the technological advances in biomaterials and drug delivery systems that promise a paradigm shift in treatment modalities in the near future. Opening the session with a look at the role of biodegradable biomaterials in ophthalmology and ocular drug delivery, Hannu Uusitalo MD, professor and chairman, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Kuopio, Finland, reminded delegates that biomaterials, whether non-degradable such as intraocular lenses, or biodegradable such as viscoelastics, are already widely used by ophthalmologists.

Determination of the most accepted facial angles and anterior-posterior chin position in patients seeking cosmetic surgery in Shiraz, Iran
BACKGROUND AND AIM: Beauty standards are related to race and change over time with cultural changes. The criteria obtained for a specific race cannot be used as treatment planning criteria for other races and societies. It seems that no thorough study has been carried out in Iranian context to determine the acceptability of these standards. In this study, the desired nasolabial (NL), nasofronta...
متن کاملRefractive Error and Anterior Segment Parametric Changes in Patients with Posterior Capsular Opacification after Nd: YAG Laser Posterior Capsulotomy
Background and Objective: Cataract is one of the most common causes of blindness in the world, and posterior capsular opacification (PCO) is the most common complication after cataract surgery. Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy is a standard method for the treatment of PCO. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Yas laser capsulotomy on anterior segment parameters and lenticu...
متن کاملAnterior spinal surgery alone in the surgical treatment of thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis: a prospective study
Background: One of the important sites for extrapulmonary TB involvement is the skeleton. Tuberculous spondylitis (Pott’s disease) comprises 50-70% of the skeletal tuberculosis. Methods: In this case series study, we prospectively investigated the result of anterior surgery alone (anterior debridement, fusion and instrumentation) in the patients with spinal tuberculosis. The patients with imma...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF ANTERIOR DISCECTOMY AND INTERPOSITION AL IMPLANT UPON LUMBAR MOTION SEGMENT STABILITY
The cadaver spine motion segment behavior under torsional load was evaluated with the disc intact, with partial anterior discectomy and with spacer insertion. The results of this study explain how anterior lumbar discectomy and interbody fusion (ALIF) affects the torsional stability of the motion segment. The pseudarthrosis rate of the anterior lumbar discectomy and interbody fusion (ALIF)...

Coronary aneurysms in adults are rare clinical entities. Herein, we presented a 54-year-old man who was admitted with an acute extensive anterior myocardial infarction. The emergency coronary angiography revealed an isolated large aneurysm at the proximal segment of the left anterior descending coronary artery. The patient was successfully treated with a graft-coated stent
